5 Ways to Decorate with Christmas Mason Jars

We hope you like the products we recommend. Just so you are aware, Freshome may collect a share of sales from the links on this page.

Mason jars have become a favorite for home decorating over the years, and with good reason. Before they adorned wedding tables, Mason jars were used to preserve food. They date all the way back to 1858, when they were first patented. Because of their vital history in traditional homes, today they make a regular appearance in traditional, country and rustic design styles. As such, they also fit in well with the Christmas season as part of a traditional or rustic Christmas decorating scheme. Read on to find creative ways to incorporate Christmas mason jars into your home this holiday season.

Christmas Mason Jars Wreath Display

Wreaths make a natural focal point around the holidays, and the candles in the jars help draw attention. Image: Rene Zieg

Wreath display

A classic way to incorporate Christmas Mason jars into a holiday design is to combine them with a wreath. The photo above shows a classy display where the Mason jars sit in front of a wreath. The candles in the jars help illuminate and draw attention to the wreath.

Finding a rustic sign to put in front of the jars also gives them a classic look. The candles are actually sitting on Epsom salt. The jars are a nice way to have candles around a wreath, minus the fire hazard, since the jars do a good job of protecting the nearby greenery.

Christmas Mason Jars Table Setting

Mason jar centerpiece

Christmas Mason jars also make a good centerpiece for a traditional, country or rustic holiday table setting. The photo above shows how well a few Mason jars with candles sit among the seasonal greenery. The evergreen, pine cones and cranberries immediately give off a rustic, country look, thanks to the natural textures. To make the display easy to transport, the whole ensemble also sits on a cut log. The log also helps add even more rustic texture to the display.

You could also get creative with this idea. Put the Mason jars on the cut log and place anything you can think of around them. For instance, you might place candy canes, garland or seasonal ribbon around the jars.

Christmas Mason Jars Tree and Candy Canes

Feel free to get creative with what you fill your Mason jars with. Image: Kootut Murut

Filling jars with candy canes and evergreen

Part of what makes Mason jars so versatile in decorating is that you can fill them with anything. The large openings make them convenient. These wide Mason jar-style containers are great for filling with candy canes, as in the photo above.

What’s really original, though, is the tiny Christmas tree that sits right in the jar. A little sprig of evergreen placed upright gives the feeling of a small Christmas tree. The sparse ribbons are also a nice touch to add to the Christmas tree vibe. Between a large Mason jar and the natural texture of the evergreen, it’s a good addition to any traditional or rustic decorating scheme. It could also fit into a minimalistic theme, since the small tree has stark and minimal elements to it.

Christmas Mason Jars Fruit and Berries

Using fruit with Christmas Mason jars

Here’s another example of how well a simple Mason jar with a tea light fits in with natural seasonal items. The photo above shows the evergreen and pine cones natural to the season, but what make this display special are the cranberries and pomegranates. These give a lush seasonal red tone to the display.

Those red items also match other items on the table, like the tablecloth. This can be a wonderful idea if you are going for a traditional red and green seasonal theme. It would also work well in any seasonal design that has pops of bright red accents.

Christmas Mason Jars with Nuts

Going nuts

The large Christmas Mason jars work well in this country Christmas design. Having nuts out during the holidays was common in traditional homes, and still is in some homes today. The nuts in the Mason jars fit with the holiday theme and add some natural elements and visual texture to the space, along with the sprigs of evergreen and over-sized pine cones.

The natural Christmas theme also goes well with the rest of the room’s rustic vibe, with the natural wicker textures, country hats on the wall, Texas star and rustic crate on the floor. It shows how a rustic Christmas theme can work with an overall room’s design.

6 Ways to Get Amazing Pumpkin Menageries This Fall

Pumpkins are a powerful element in autumn decorating. They pack a colorful punch. Since they’re harvested in the fall, they make everyone think of the autumnal season. They’re also extremely versatile. It’s easy to paint pumpkins, add jeweled accents or buy different types with wild textures. And one way to make the most of pumpkins in your autumn decorating is to go for a whole menagerie of them. That way, you can work with different colors, textures and styles. And a grouping of pumpkins can serve as a whole large focal point in your fall decor. Below, you’ll find several ways to work with pumpkin menageries.

Pumpkin Menageries Porch Display

Separate your pumpkin menagerie to create balance. Image: Kirkendall Design

Add Balance to the Doorway

Pumpkin menageries work well on the porch. They add a splash of color to what tends to be a fairly neutral space. And having them on the porch sets an instant fall harvest vibe for any guests coming to your door.

The photo above shows how placing a pumpkin menagerie on either side of the door is a great way to add balance to the space. The style also does a great job of using different pumpkins with multiple sizes, colors and textures. Groups of pumpkins also pair well with other fall colors, like the bold yellow flowers and deep red and orange door wreaths.

Pumpkin Menageries Metallic Paint

Painted pumpkins add style and layers to the design. Image: Sarah Greenman

Use Multiple Colors and Textures

You can also go bolder in your colors and textures. The photo above shows how some white pumpkins combine well with bold metallic painted pumpkins. Little accents like polka dots update the traditional harvest pumpkin, making this style a good choice for chic home designs.

You can even paint one of the pumpkins a less common pumpkin color, like sage green, to add a bit of an accent. You can also use more conceptual pieces, like the twig pumpkins, for added texture. The photo also shows how easy it is to place pumpkins on shelves and in planters to get different heights for each piece.

Pumpkin Menageries Jewel Design

Add jewel accents for a chic take on the design. Image: Kirkendall Design

Go for Textured Designs

Another idea is to add jeweled designs to natural pumpkins. This is a good way to get a more updated, chic take on the look, too. These pair well with other natural elements, like the yellow flowers and twig pumpkin.

The photo above highlights another good idea for displaying pumpkin menageries. A retro produce cart is a natural choice. You can also prop up some of the elements of the design using classic wooden crates. Overall, it makes you feel like the fall harvest has just come to sell at the fair. It’s a classic country look that goes well with the fall harvest theme.

Pumpkin Menageries Stair Display

You can get creative on where you place your pumpkin menagerie. Image: Hunt Laudi Studio

Put Pumpkins in Unexpected Places

Feel free to place pumpkin menageries in creative places around the home. An example from the photo above shows how well a line of pumpkins can go under some stairs. Some accent lighting behind them can draw the eye to your harvest accent.

The photo also shows how a pumpkin menagerie can work in the most modern of spaces. The orange of the pumpkins acts as an attractive accent color in this otherwise clean, white space. The lighting behind the pumpkins keeps the display looking more modern. Yellow flowers on the table also add a complementing fall color accent.

Pumpkin Menageries Small Display

A smaller menagerie makes a great accent in a room. Image: Kirkendall Design

Go for Small Accents

Your pumpkin menagerie doesn’t have to be a giant spectacle. The photo above shows how a few pumpkins and some fall foliage on a counter can add a nice harvest accent to a room. This is an easy, attractive idea that can work on end tables, on a mantel, on a shelf or in the middle of a kitchen island, as a few examples. It’s an easy idea that you can place anywhere.

As in the photo, try to go for pumpkins with different colors and textures. That will add visual interest and help the element pop in the room. It is on the smaller side, so different colors and textures will help draw attention to the display.

Pumpkin Menageries Texture Display

Find different pumpkins and gourds for a full-textured display. Image: Julie Ranee

Use Unique Textures in Pumpkin Menageries

Have you ever looked at those weird, misshapen pumpkins in the store and wondered why anyone would ever want them? The photo above shows why. If you’re creating a pumpkin menagerie, the name of the game is texture and color. And the photo above shows how different textures, colors and shapes of pumpkins can make an eye-grabbing display. Unique pumpkins are a good idea if you’re going for a natural display that is not accented with paint or jeweled additions.

The photo above also shows how well pumpkin menageries can work on and around classic items, like the old distressed toolbox. Pumpkins also work well placed on distressed wooden furniture, as you can see in the background. It all combines for a delightfully rustic look.

Everything You Need to Know About Using Textiles in Interior Design

Too often in interior design, textiles are seen as an afterthought. People view them as a finishing touch rather than a crucial component of the design as a whole. In reality, however, you can’t design a room without them.

That’s why we’ve dedicated this piece to textiles. Read on to learn how they contribute to a room and how to use them in the right way. We hope you gain a new appreciation for your home’s fabrics.

what

The term “textile” refers to anything in the room woven or made of fabric. Image: DHD Architecture and Interior Design

What are textiles?

In interior design, the term “textile” refers to any product that’s woven or made of fabric. It may sound simple, but these pieces are used in a variety of applications throughout any room. You can see them in design elements, such as:

why

Textiles help set the mood for the space. Image: Relativity Textiles

Why textiles matter

Textiles go a long way toward helping set the mood of a space. Imagine how different it would feel to stand in a bedroom that’s draped in silk and velvet than a living area that’s mainly made up of bamboo and cotton. When buying your textiles, you should consider the type of mood that you want to portray in each space and choose your fabrics accordingly.

Textiles also work to unify the room and help bring the space together. This is where your color palette comes into play. Once you have one in mind, you can take one or two of the colors – usually your secondary and accent shades – and use them in various textiles throughout the room.

Take the photo above as an example. Here, the faux-fur gives the room a glamorous and feminine feel. Since it’s white, it ties in with the walls, the bedding, and the furniture to help the room feel cohesive. Meanwhile, the patterned throw pillow in the center of the bed adds a pop of contrast to keep the space from feeling too boring and repetitive. Notice that the pattern on the pillow has a little dark gray in it. This ensures that the pillow still ties in with the rest of the room.

textiles

Follow these tips on using textiles in your interior design. Image: Laura U, Inc.

How to use textiles

Now that you know what textiles are and why they’re so important to your design, the next step is to learn how to use them correctly. Below is a list of tips to help get you started.

Use them as inspiration

Textiles may seem like accessories or the last design elements to purchase but they’re actually the opposite. They can serve as the inspiration for the space, providing a color palette upon which to build the room. When you’re not sure where to start with a room, turn to a rug, accent chair or even a throw pillow to give you a sense of direction.

Mix patterns, not colors

Once you have your color palette in place, stick to it. Using too many colors in a room can make it feel hectic and confusing. That said, it doesn’t mean your room has to be boring. You can still add plenty of visual interest to the space by mixing patterns. Make an effort to use multiple patterns  — and solids — that fall within the same palette.

Layer textures

Another way to add visual interest to the space is by using textiles that come in a variety of textures. Remember, in this case, texture refers to the way in which the fabric looks like it feels. Try mixing and matching different textures throughout the room or even layering them together in order to create a sense of contrast.

Let us know what textiles inspire you and how you incorporate them into your designs.

5 Updated Thanksgiving Decor Ideas for a Classy Look

We hope you like the products we recommend. Just so you are aware, Freshome may collect a share of sales from the links on this page.

If you helped decorate your home for Thanksgiving as a child, there’s a good chance you remember decorating with a few key items: turkey napkins, Pilgrim-themed window clings and the turkey placemat made from an outline of your own hand. These can be seasonal mainstays in many homes. But if you’re hosting a Thanksgiving meal as an adult, odds are you want your home to look a little more trendy and chic. We’ve covered some updated Thanksgiving decor that will give your home a classier look and bring your Thanksgiving into the 21st century. The ideas below are fast and easy additions to the home so you can focus on all that cooking.

Updated Thanksgiving Décor Throw Pillow

Look updated and classy with realistic art. Image: Wayfair

Artistic throw pillow

If you’re looking for a way to incorporate updated Thanksgiving decor, go for more realistic artistic pieces. An example is the turkey throw pillow from Wayfair in the photo above. Turkey decor can look a little silly and hokey at times, with smiling cartoon birds sporting Pilgrim hats. But this decor piece, with a realistic turkey, fits right into any classy fall decorating scheme.

It also goes to show that finding a realistic, classy throw pillow is one of the best ways to decorate for the holidays. They’re super easy to put out, and they instantly set the tone. The burlap texture of the pillow fits in with the harvest theme. You’d almost expect the pillow to be full of freshly harvested wheat.

Updated Thanksgiving Décor Fall Bouquet

A classic bouquet adds instant charm to a space. Image: Wayfair

Fall-themed bouquet

Another classy way to decorate using updated Thanksgiving decor is to find a fall-themed bouquet. An example is the design in the photo above. The deep yellow, cream and red hues instantly set the fall color scheme.

A bouquet like this would be easy to place in the middle of a table as a centerpiece, on a mantel or just on an end table. There’s really nothing quite like a well-designed bouquet to give a room or table setting an instant feeling of class.

Keep it looking updated with a trendy, metal vase for the arrangement to sit in, like in the photo above. You can find this item at Wayfair.

Updated Thanksgiving Décor Table Luminaries

Add an ambient glow with small luminaries at the table. Image: Sterling Renovations and Design

Luminary table setting

Luminaries make just about anything classy in an instant. They add soft, atmospheric lighting at the table, creating a subdued, adult ambiance. The table setting in the photo above makes great use of small bird luminaries. The bird theme makes them a perfect addition to any Thanksgiving dinner table.

They also fit well around the clear vase, illuminating the pumpkins, berries and fall foliage within. They cast a pretty light over the bright yellow flowers and red leaves. What’s more, placing luminaries on a reflective surface can add an extra dimension of light. And the high-gloss texture of the reflective surface makes the whole scene look more modern and updated. It’s an all-around great way to get festive lighting at your Thanksgiving table.

Updated Thanksgiving Décor Tree Centerpiece

This metal sculpture encourages guest participation. Image: Wayfair

Tabletop sculpture for updated Thanksgiving decor

An easy way to use updated Thanksgiving decor is to go for a classy tabletop sculpture piece. They’re easy to order online and even easier to place around the home. An example is the tree sculpture from Wayfair in the photo above. The metal design makes the piece look both modern and classy.

What’s fun about an idea like this is that it allows your guests to participate in your decorations by writing what they’re grateful for on the leaves. You could place this next to the entryway and encourage people to write what they’re grateful for on the way in, or use it as a dinner game.

Updated Thanksgiving Décor Chrome Pieces

For an updated look, try high-gloss reflective textures. Image: Lisa’s Creative Designs

Shimmering textures

A great way to make something look modern and updated is to choose high-gloss chrome textures. These tend to give a feeling of sleek, modern sensibility. An example of using this idea in Thanksgiving decor is to buy a reflective pumpkin piece, like in the photo above.

To integrate the piece, try going for other chrome items, like the candlesticks next to the pumpkin. You can also get the same look using different colors, like the reflective orange pumpkin in the photo above. Reflective textures like the glass turkey take the look even further.

What are some of your favorite updated Thanksgiving decor items?

9 New Paint Colors By Farrow And Ball

We hope you like the products we recommend. Just so you are aware, Freshome may collect a share of sales from the links on this page.

Farrow & Ball has been the go-to paint purveyor for perfectly polished English interiors since 1930. The company is very selective about its colors, which consist of a tight collection that never goes above or below 132 paint colors.

They just introduced nine new colors during the London Design Festival that left designers and home enthusiasts excited about paint again. The nine new colors are the first released by the company since 2016. They’re perfectly on trend, yet also bound to be classic enough for the most traditional home. They are available at a showroom near you, or online.

The new Farrow & Ball colors all flow well together to create a color palette that can be used throughout the house cohesively. All images: Farrow & Ball

Here are the nine new paint colors by Farrow and Ball

1. Treron No. 292

Treron No. 292 is a darker, richer version of one of Farrow & Ball’s best selling colors: Pigeon. It’s one of two greens introduced. The new deep olive shade works well in nearly any design style where you want to update the space and also create a more intimate setting.

The grey-green shade adds contrast to a crisp, white farmhouse-style kitchen. It also works well with cool tones like whites, blues and greys.

2. Sulking Room Pink No. 295

Sulking Room Pink No. 295 is a grown-up pink. Earthy and muted, the rose shade pairs well with ivories as well as warm wood tones.

farrow and ball sulking room pink

The dreamy, romantic pink would be a good addition to a bedroom, reading nook or bathroom.

3. De Nimes No. 299

The name and shade derive from the everyday work fabric made in the French city of Nimes. According to Farrow & Ball, De Nimes No. 299 is, “Like denim, its blue hue is ultimately fashionable and yet always feels grounded.”

farrow and ball paints denimes blue

The grounding shade of blue adds a zen feeling to any space. It’s a great paint tone for kitchen cabinets or in a master bathroom.

4. School House White No. 291

When a basic white looks cold and ordinary, choose the new School House White No. 291. It’s the lightest color of the introductions and is inspired by what white would look like after many years in an old school house.

school house white farrow and ball

The soft white shade is perfect for refreshing wood paneling. For a soothing, monochromatic effect, use various tones of the white hue in furniture, surfaces and textiles.

5. Bancha No. 298

A very modern green, Bancha No. 298 flows well with mid-century modern furniture. The serene green complements warm, natural wood tones. According to Farrow & Ball: “Named after Japanese tea leaves, Bancha, like a cup of green tea, provides a feeling of security.”

Bancha Farrow & Ball

A dramatic focal wall painted in the new green adds to the mid-century modern design of this kitchen interior.

6. Preference Red No. 297

Preference Red No. 297 is sure to be one of the company’s most beloved colors. Farrow and Ball also seem to think so – they named the deep red after the company’s original name, Preference Paints.

Farrow and Ball Preference Red

Designed to pair well with the new colors, Farrow and Ball says this red is, “striking when seen in combination with Paean Black and Sulking Room Pink.”

7. Paean Black No. 294

Paean Black No. 294 is a hybrid of deep indigo, ink and black with red undertones to create a rich, violet tone. Although Georgian-inspired to work with the most traditional rooms, the deep color can also be very contemporary.

paean black farrow and ball paints

A bathroom is partially painted in Paean Black No. 294 in order to add warmth and intimacy to the white design. Lavender and grey accents also work well with the color.

8. Jitney No. 293

Here’s a coastal-chic color that can freshen up a space. Jitney No. 293 may be muted, but the shade, according to Farrow & Ball, “is meant to evoke lazy days by the sea, hence being named after the bus that whisks New Yorkers to the similarly colored sandy beaches of the Hamptons.”

Jitney Farrow and Ball new color

The neutral, sand-inspired color is saturated enough to add depth to a room. Similar to a light mocha shade, you can layer various neutrals of browns, ivories and greys together for a modern look.

9. Rangwali No. 296

Rangwali No. 296 is the most daring of the nine new Farrow and Ball shades. Named after the bright powder thrown during the Holi festival of colors in India, its depth comes from the addition of a small amount of black pigment.

farrow and ball new paints

Add a tropical touch to your setting by painting a wall in Rangwali No. 296. Pair the color with bright yellow and orange accents and decor for a summer vibe.

Farrow & Ball’s paints are all earth friendly and low-odor. Love their highly fashionable paint colors? You can also order Farrow & Ball paints at Anthropologie. Let us know which new paint color is your favorite.

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Reveals What’s Trending

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) tracks yearly trends through its Best in American Living award winners and its Design Trends Roundtable. Alexandra Isham, Program Manager for Design at the NAHB, let Freshome in on some of the trends the organization has observed.

The lines are blurring between commercial and residential applications.

industrial features

Industrial features add to the beauty of this Seattle home. Image: Laurence Architecture

Materials are being used interchangeably in commercial and residential products, according to Isham. “A couple of examples include metal and wire railing systems in single-family houses, even ones with more traditional details where we would normally expect wood,” she says. “Another example is exposed metal beams, even in smaller cottages, that are tastefully incorporated.”

Isham explains that these are the kinds of details normally seen in trendy retail settings and other types of commercial spaces.

Mid-century modern takes a back seat.

Mid-century modern

This San Francisco kitchen combines form and function. Image: Fiorella Design

Transitional design blends traditional and contemporary architecture – and we’re seeing more of it. It’s also known as trans-contemporary, and incorporates aesthetics and function. “There should be a rhyme and reason to the shapes, as opposed to just being ‘modern,’’’ Isham says of transitional design. The NAHB has also noticed that there’s less of a focus on mid-century modern.

Less is more.

Less is more

Clean and simple lines and detailing are in. However, Isham says that homebuyers still like traditional details. Another trend on the outs: rounded corners on drywall are becoming less popular.

Open floor plans gain definition.

Open floor plans

There are clearly-defined areas in this open concept floor plan. Image: Arthur Dyson Architects

While open floor plans are still the most popular choice among homebuyers, they want more definition between the spaces. “This can be achieved by altering ceiling heights or adding ceiling details like finishes or lighting, columns, a change in flooring type or direction, etc.,” Isham says.

“The beauty of open plans is that they can respond to the site conditions and needs and wants of the buyer.” For example, she says a living/family room can be placed at the front or the rear of a home. “Our members are also increasingly asked to include flex spaces in their plans that can be quickly converted to an office, extra seating, a craft room, a playroom, etc.”

Open floor plan2

This Austin home also has a clearly defined open floor plan. Image: Triton Austin

Isham says ceiling treatments are also being used to define spaces. “Another way to define separate areas is by using lighting, especially pendant light fixtures,” she says.

Formal dining rooms return.

Surely this beautiful Manhattan dining room makes the food taste even better. Image: Robert Kaner Interior Design

Opinions are mixed on formal living rooms. However, Isham says formal dining rooms are making a comeback for two reasons. First, weekend chefs love to cook and entertain friends and family members. Secondly, large families and multigenerational families living in the same house are fueling the rising popularity of formal dining rooms.

Other trends.

Isham is seeing more metal and wood on home exteriors, and shades of beige are also popular. “However, I don’t think that there is any one façade that defines single-family housing in the US – the regions, buyers and design aesthetics are so diverse that there’s really something for everyone.” Mixed materials are trending, but she says there are also a lot of traditional designs.  “Board and batten is very popular in some parts of the country, stone and wood in others.”

“We’re seeing shiplap everywhere,” Isham says. “More detailed and unique tile patterns are also trending, from adding more interest to a kitchen backsplash to incorporating interesting geometry on a bathroom floor.”

Among flooring options, she says luxury plank vinyl is extremely trendy and wood remains a popular choice.

Aging Gracefully: Timeless Design for a Classic Home

Trends may come and go, but taste is forever. When designing your own home, it’s tempting to take an “everything but the kitchen sink” attitude. There are so many exciting features and fun trends to inspire your build! But before getting whisked away on the trend train, you need to remember that today’s trend is tomorrow’s dated. It’s better to take a classic approach to designing and building your own home. That way, you can incorporate trends without letting them take over. Aging gracefully isn’t just for skin care and fashion; the same ideas can be applied to home design. Take these factors into consideration to create a timeless design for your home.

Blast from the past

There’s a reason some architectural styles have been popular for centuries. By incorporating some of these classical design styles, you’ll be sure your home will age gracefully. Ask for Greek elements by incorporating columns, or embrace French style with arched windows. Work with your architect to bring historical elements into a fresh perspective. Borrowing from the past means a chic, tasteful future for your home.

timeless design cabinets

Keep it simple

Clean lines and simple layouts keep your home fresh for years to come. Think about it: Yesterday’s smaller rooms seem outdated when compared to today’s open concept layouts. That’s because homes designed around specific purposes and trends fall victim to time. What worked five or 10 years ago might seem stale today. That’s why simple design and clean lines work best. After all, it’s much easier to paint over simple woodwork than to replace ornate and outdated cabinets. In design, less is more for aging gracefully.

timeless design functional

Function over form

An architect worth their salt will be able to tell you that form should always follow function. That means you should focus on the function of your home before you start thinking about aesthetics. Sure, you might have always dreamed of a hacienda-style place, but timeless design focuses on the purpose of the home first. Talk to your designer about the way you live, work and entertain. Nail down the specifics of your home’s function first and you’ll find that its form will better stand the test of time.

timeless design neutrals

Neutral backgrounds

A surefire way to make your home look dated is to use the color du jour for the walls. Sure, it’s popular now, but will it always look as fresh and current? Just five years ago, coral was the “it” color for new homes, but gray has been more popular in years since. In fact, we’d be willing to bet that there have been more than a few coral cover-up jobs since then. By using neutral colors as a backdrop for your home, you can easily swap in colorful, trendy accents. Commit to neutrals as your safe choice and you won’t feel guilty for a fleeting love of plaid or paisley.

timeless design wallpaper

Texture over pattern

One of the simplest ways to ensure your home ages gracefully is to decorate with texture rather than pattern. Patterns are one of the quickest elements to go in and out of style. Palm print might be huge this year, but next year it will be something else entirely. Instead of, say, plastering your wall with palm wallpaper, it’s better to opt for a rich textured paper instead. Texture adds just as much personality and depth as print, but it’s much less prone to trendiness. A jute wallpaper is just as breezy as palm print, and you won’t have to change it when something else becomes popular.

timeless design natural materials

Durable materials

Architectural design is only part of the equation for a timeless exterior. The materials you use can definitely factor into how your home ages. The rule of thumb is to use durable, natural materials for a timeless home. Vinyl or aluminum may be cheaper, but materials like wood, brick and stone are higher quality. You may find it’s better to design and build a smaller home with durable materials than a larger one using less expensive materials. The first will always look current and the second can cycle in and out of style – and cost money to maintain and repair.

Think about all the trends your mom used to decorate. They seem hopelessly outdated today, right? Designing and building a custom home means taking every component into consideration. Choosing finishes, fixtures and elements that are simple and classic will always serve you well. Skip the flash-in-a-pan design and you’ll have a home with timeless design that looks fresh and classic – no matter its age.
