50 Powder Room Ideas That Transform Your Small Half Bath From Ordinary To Extraordinary

The powder room, also known as a small guest bath or half bath, is usually located near a home or apartment’s entrance and consists of a toilet and sink. Most half bath spaces are small and basic, but they don’t have to be.

If you entertain often, your guests will most likely use your half bath. What does the room say about you? It’s time to transform your half bath from ordinary to extraordinary with our powder room ideas and tips that will make your guests’ visit a swoon-worthy experience.

Use Some Creative Powder Room Ideas To Create A Picture-Worthy Setting

powder room ideas and half bath decor

What’s the first thing a first-time visitor will notice when they open the door to your half bath? Make it creative and memorable, like this powder room. The homeowner layered a decorative, antique mirror over the simple wall mirror and included plenty of half bath decor and art to finish the room. Image: Cynthia Driscoll Interiors

First things first. Don’t treat your powder room like an ordinary bathroom. See your half bath as a tiny treasure box waiting to be opened and discovered. And so the first secret to creating a gorgeous space is to consider what guests will see the first time they open the door.

Tip: Open the door to your half bath and visualize what it should ideally look like. Will there be a bold splash of color? Will the vanity and lights be symmetrical and perfectly centered in the door opening? Will the colors and textures draw you in?

Pretend you’re a photographer and snap a photo of your half bath from outside the room with the door open. Then see how you can improve the design for a better photo, like these half bath ideas:

Half Bath Ideas Featuring Color

Powder rooms are where you “freshen up,” so why not freshen up your half bath by adding an unexpected color like violet? Image: Black Lacquer Design

You’re dealing with a small space, so don’t be afraid to be bold. One of the easiest ways to make a big statement is with a bold color.

Tip: Forget the rule that small spaces should be white or light. Add your favorite color to the walls. Some powder room ideas that add color to your space include:

  • Painting the entire room in a deep, rich color – ceiling included
  • Painting the wall behind the vanity in a high-gloss, bold shade
  • Adding colorful accents like towels and art in bright tones

Read more about small bathroom rules worth breaking here.

Here are some powder room ideas featuring color for inspiration:

Wallpaper Your Powder Room Walls

The latest wallpaper designs are a great way to breathe life (and design) into your small powder room. The variety of colors and patterns available can transform your powder room into quite the showcase!

Tip: Choose a vinyl, water-resistant wallpaper, just in case splashing happens. And if you live in a rental, look for removable wallpapers that make it easy to take the wallpaper down without damaging the walls when you move out. You can read more on removable wallpaper here.

Splurge On Stunning Tile

A geometric tile in fashion-forward lilac creates a one-of-a-kind powder room. Image: Complementto Tiles

Tile can be expensive. But if you have a tiny half bath, you don’t need a lot of tile to make a big statement. Go for it – the effect far exceeds the initial cost.

Tip: If you’re going to splurge on tile, choose a tile with a graphic pattern or unique look and use it floor-to-ceiling. If your budget is limited, tile the vanity wall and use a less expensive flooring option, like vinyl adhesive tiles, that look like stone or real tiles.

Don’t Settle For Ordinary Powder Room Mirrors

Your half bath square footage is limited, so make every inch count! Powder room mirrors are not only the exclamation point in your half bath’s design, but they also expand a tiny bathroom.

Tip: Don’t shop for a basic mirror. Look for an interesting art frame and add a mirror to one. Or do something unexpected like creating a gallery wall of small mirrors over your vanity. Get creative!

Look for a mirror with unexpected details like a lattice design to the glass or a Moroccan shape, like these dramatic powder room mirrors. Images: MHouse and St. Amand Design

Choose Powder Room Lighting That’s Functional And Fashionable

There are several lighting elements in this modern powder room: a wall-washing overhead can, a candle and lighting mounted behind the mirror to cast a glow. Image: Chris Jovanelly

Good lighting can make all the difference in your powder room. Consider the powder room lighting to be the earrings that complete your outfit (or half bath).

Tip: Layer your lighting to include mood lighting and functional lighting. A pendant can create a statement and still light up the room. Wall sconces or candles can add to the ambiance. Consider a brighter, cooler-temperature bulb for your functional lighting and dimmer, warmer bulbs for your ambient lighting.

Offset The Elements On Your Focal Wall For Visual Interest

Want to do something fresh and modern in your half bath? You can center everything and go for a symmetrical look. Or you can break the rules to add interest by grouping things to one side.

Tip: Some ways you can add visual interest by offsetting the elements in your powder room include:

  • Mounting the mirror to the left or right of the vanity
  • Hanging lighting or pendants in a grouping on one side
  • Grouping accessories on one end or the other

Make The Vanity The Star Of Your Half Bath

The powder room has two main functions: washing up and using the toilet. The vanity, therefore, is very important in your small bathroom. Make it a showstopper.

Tip: Choose a small piece of furniture to repurpose as a vanity. Add a vessel-style sink that sits on top of the piece. Or to save space and go for a contemporary look, mount a floating-ledge counter. Looking for the perfect small bathroom vanity? Check this roundup out, featuring the best small bathroom vanities for sale now.

Dress Up Your Half Bath Walls To Add Value

The elegant wall panels, reminiscent of a French drawing room or traditional library, can add a luxurious look to your half bath. Image: Gresinger Construction

A little bit of carpentry can add a high-end, expensive feel to the most basic half bath. If you own your home or apartment, adding wainscoting, paneling or molding to your powder room can increase your home’s property value.

Tip: Mount crown molding or pre-fab wood wall panels to your half bath and paint them in a semi-gloss or eggshell finish for a high-end feel.

Small In Space But Grand In Texture Is The Secret To A Stunning Half Bath

powder room ideas

The designer sourced an antique Moroccan tile for the powder room. To continue the high-texture and pattern theme, the pendant, mirror, wall art and vanity feature Moroccan design. Image: Imperfect Interiors

Texture adds an air of sophistication to any interior. Texture is also incredibly attractive to most people because of its tactile feeling that draws people closer to touch. Although your powder room is small, layer as much texture as you can to add depth.

Tip: When working with texture, stick to a soft, monochromatic color theme. If you stick with natural colors that are varying shades of the same tone, mixing and matching different patterns and textures will be successful.

Some ways to add more texture into your powder room include natural stone finishes with varying (and imperfect) patterns and surfaces. Images: 2id Interiors and Laura U Interiors

Complete Your Half Bath With Accessories

powder room ideas and half bath decor

Here’s a half bath that’s crisp and well-tailored in neutral tones with black and white accessories like hand towels, candles and wall art complete the look. Image: Magleby Construction

Now that you’ve created the coolest powder room ever, it’s time to pull it all together with the perfect accessories. After all, the magic is in the details.

Tip: Some items you may want to add to complete your powder room include:

  • A wastebasket that coordinates with a soap dispenser, tissue box cover and tray
  • Wall art
  • Candles or room diffusers
  • A vase or decorative vase collection
  • Towels featuring a unique design detail
  • Plants or orchids

7 Holiday Hostess Gifts Every Guest Should Bring

Holiday hostess gift ideas

Holiday hostess gift ideas for the perfect guest. Image: Pottery Barn

We hope you like the products we recommend. Just so you are aware, Freshome may collect a share of sales from the links on this page.

We love parties, but finding the perfect holiday hostess gift is sometimes a challenge. You don’t want to walk in empty-handed, and you really don’t want to stop at a grocery store on the way for a gift that screams “I just bought this!” If you want to elevate your gift-giving skills to “perfect guest” level, we can help.

Five signs you’re the perfect guest

  • RSVP. With the popularity of online invites, letting your host know you’ll be there, (or not) will earn you star-status as a favorite guest.
  • Give the right kind of help. No need to be the guest that takes over the kitchen, stressing your host out even more — a strategic helping hand is much-appreciated.
  • Show up on time, if the party is not a “drop-in” affair.
  • Look for ways to connect with other guests, and check in with guests that may not know anyone there.
  • Bring the perfect hostess gift.

The best holiday hostess gifts are simple, festive and easily shared at the party. Here are some of our favorites right now.

Give Christmas decor to your favorite hostess

Christmas decor pillows

This festive Christmas throw pillow hits the right note for a holiday hostess gift. Image: Pottery Barn

Bringing holiday decor as a gift is fun and festive, especially if you are close friends with your host or hostess. Look for gifts that easily coordinate with any decorating style or color scheme. Festive throw pillows are perfect for gifting, as they make a design statement on their own. Pillow covers in standard throw pillow sizes are especially welcome as they can transform everyday decor seasonally.

Holiday hostess gift ideas when you’re the guest of a guest

Fireplace holiday gifts

Add some sparkle to the party with these festive color-changing pine cones for the fireplace. Image: Amazon.com

Even if you’re a +1 on the guest list, bringing a hostess gift is encouraged and very welcome. A simple gift like Festive Fun Rainbow-Flame Pine Cones packs a lot of holiday cheer in a small basket. When you don’t know your host or hostess well, a gift filled with Christmas cheer, like scented candles, holiday coasters or seasonal candies, is a thoughtful gesture.

Bring something delicious with a fun food gift

S'mores maker gift

The Salton S’mores and Fondue Maker can wake up even the sleepiest of parties. Image: Target

Let’s face it, even the best parties can hit a little lull. The best thing about a gift like the Salton S’Mores maker is that it can bring the guests together in pursuit of a delicious treat, with s’mores or fondue. Add a basket filled with S’mores supplies, including great chocolate, and you have the perfect holiday hostess gift.

Flameless candles make perfect holiday hostess gift

Flameless candle gifts

Brighten up the party with these stylish flameless pillar candles. Image: Walmart

Candles are always a thoughtful gift, but flameless candles will delight your recipient even more. Unlike traditional candles, flameless candles won’t disappear a little each time you use them. These Better Homes & Gardens candles are super stylish with a popular trellis design. Each candle also features a timer, for a beautiful, and practical, gift.

A gift for your beer-loving host

Do your friends love craft beer? Bring the gift of a beer tasting set to make sure you are always invited back. Four sampler glasses line up on an acacia wood tray to serve comparison sips of pilsners, ales, stouts and other brews. Classic beer glasses hold eight ounces of beer, identified by imprinted numbers in the board’s cutout wells that can also hold beer caps.

Bring the right food gift

Christmas Food Gift Cocoa

Gourmet hot chocolate and marshmallows are a party-gifting power couple. Image: Williams Sonoma

Resist the urge to stop at a grocery store on your way to the party to pick up a few dozen cookies in a clear plastic box. To be a party guest that every host loves, plan ahead with a thoughtful food gift that will last after the festivities are over. Your food gift doesn’t have to be extravagant — look for pre-paired sets like gourmet hot chocolate and marshmallows,  or create your own set with a few indulgences for the holiday season.

A gift for the morning after the party

Brunch party pastry gifts

No need to cook after a big party with a of gift of breakfast treats. Image: Williams Sonoma

After the party winds down and the guests go home, your breakfast gift will be remembered as the most thoughtful. No matter how many guests pitch in to clean up after the party, the kitchen is never quite ready for breakfast the next morning — unless a clever guest (you) brought the perfect gift. When choosing a holiday hostess gift for the next morning, go with baked goods that need no preparation.

The Most Important Items for Any Kitchen

What room in your home could you absolutely not live without? With the exception of perhaps the bathroom, no room matters more to your family’s comfort at home than the kitchen. This room is often the heart of the home. And even if you don’t love cooking, your kitchen is still a room you’ll use a regular basis to grab coffee, a quick snack or a throw-together meal.

Whether you’re an expert chef or a have never stood over a stovetop, a well-stocked kitchen can make your life at home a little easier and more pleasant. We polled our team at Freshome to figure out which items we all agree are needed for a functional kitchen. Here are our kitchen must-haves.

Refrigerator

There is no shortage of kitchen appliance options. But none of them are as critical as the fridge. It might not seem glamorous, but the refrigerator is a superstar in any cooking space. If you’re just moving into your first apartment, a smaller, standard fridge is a great place to start. If you’re ready to upgrade, however, shop around. Glass door refrigerators are beautiful and trendy. They’re ideal for people who want a sleek, modern look to their kitchen. Or, if you like a more traditional look, you can panel the fridge doors in material that matches your kitchen cabinets.

Alternately, smart fridges are ideal for the tech-savvy family – or those who just want to save time and money. They can do everything from help you remember to use items before they expire to serve as a message board for the house. Whichever type of fridge you choose, be willing to invest. This is a staple appliance and it’s worth getting a good one.

Knives

Another important investment, a good kitchen knife makes chopping easier and can even help you avoid injury. The good news is that quality knives will last for years and years, so you can feel confident about investing in them. If you’re looking for something to get you started, our team loves this three-piece knife set from Williams Sonoma.

kitchen coffee station

Coffee or tea station

Food isn’t the only reason to use your kitchen. Beverages can be equally important, especially if you’re looking for a quality way to start your day. Setting up a well-appointed coffee or tea station makes the ritual of enjoying a warm beverage easier and more pleasant. Stock your station with plenty of mugs you love and whatever equipment you need to whip up your beverage of choice. If you’re looking for a starter option, check out this extremely affordable coffee pot from Target. Or if you want to add a splash of color, try this vintage-style tea kettle from Williams Sonoma is aqua or red. Then, add other fun touches like stir sticks, a sugar jar and fun art.

Functional stovetop

Much like the refrigerator, a stovetop is a non-negotiable in a kitchen. Our team has a variety of preferences on the type of cooking surface; some of us prefer a gas range while others love a glass-top stove. The latter is easy to clean and adds a nice streamlined aesthetic to the kitchen while the former allows you greater control over your cooking temperature. Ultimately, either option will suffice as long as it provides you with a quality place to fry, sautee and stew.

Even if you don’t love to cook, a stovetop is still important. Our team loves meal prep services like Blue Apron because they take so much of the guesswork and headache out of prepping dinner. If you want to make cooking easier and more fun so you actually enjoy standing at your stovetop, we recommend trying one out.

Eat-in area

Even if you’re lucky enough to have space for a formal dining room, that may not be the vibe you want for all of your meals. Creating an eat-in area in your kitchen, whether it’s a few stools pulled up to your kitchen island or a sunny breakfast nook, gives the room extra functionality and creates a space where all your family members – even those who don’t cook – can enjoy the room.

Grab and go food

While the kitchen is a place to occasionally invest hours creating masterful meals, many of us are so busy that it also needs to offer quick-service functionality. Keep your kitchen stocked with your family’s favorite grab-and-go options. You’ll find our pantries prepped with cereal and granola bars (we love KIND). A bowl of fresh fruit on the countertop makes it easy to get in our recommended daily servings. Or we’ll throw some English muffins in a Cuisinart toaster for a quick, versatile breakfast base. Whatever options work well for you, keep them handy so your kitchen can serve you even when you’re in a rush.

Other kitchen essentials

Obviously, we haven’t even gone into some of the other, more straightforward must-haves like silverware and dishware. Choosing your ideal sets all comes down to marrying your needs (i.e. durable dishware is key with young kids) with your tastes. Have fun with it!
