Visual Weight 101: How to Balance Any Room

visual weight 1

Why does this room feel so balanced? The visually heavy concrete wall is balanced by airy chairs and lightweight, interestingly arranged art. Image: Photographee.eu/Shutterstock

Think about the spaces you love. Whether’s it a room in your own home or apartment, or something you fawned over on Pinterest, the room probably has a sense of balance. When your eye scans it, you can follow a natural flow. You pick out pieces that are anchoring the space and others that give it a feeling of openness.

Now think about spaces you hate, like the waiting room at the doctor’s office or the DMV. Sure, the poor lighting and stark decor don’t do these spaces any favors. But they also feel heavy and, put simply, blah.

You want to create a space that wows and isn’t at all reminiscent of the DMV. Fortunately, visual weight can help. Let’s take a look at this interior design tool.

visual weight 2

When you want to open up a space, choose visually lightweight pieces, like those elevated on slender legs. Image: ParvinMaharramov/Shutterstock

What is visual weight, exactly?

Visual weight relates to the way an object attracts and interacts with our eye. In short, visual weight is how much your eye thinks a piece weighs. In most cases, this is pretty well tied to its actual weight. Solid wood items look visually heavy and are, in fact, heavy themselves. But visual weight and actual weight don’t always go hand in hand. Take, for example, a couch. If you put it on low, block legs or no legs at all, it will look very visually heavy. If, however, you mount it on taller hairpin legs, you can significantly reduce its visual weight.

This is a big part of why furniture is so important in a room. As some of the largest – if not the largest – pieces in a room, furniture is going to define the visual weight of the space. Too many sturdy, heavy pieces will make the room feel weighed down. Too many lightweight pieces that allow the eye through (like pieces in acrylic or with thin wire framing) and can make the space feel unestablished.

What gives an item its visual weight?

You might be wondering how to determine the visual weight of an item. Here are a few factors that affect visual weight:

  • Size: The larger an item is, the more visually heavy it will appear.
  • Shape: Shapes we’re used to, like squares and rectangles, usually appear heavier than irregular shapes with curves or unexpected angles.
  • Proximity: A large, heavy-looking item can be made to appear lighter by surrounding it with other objects. When standing alone, its visual weight will be more apparent.
  • Color: Lighter items generally appear less heavy than darker ones of the same size and shape.
  • Texture/Depth: Texture that adds a lot of shadow can make an object seem visually heavier. Similarly, items with more depth look heavier. For example, a deep bookshelf will carry more visual weight than a shallow one of the same size and shape.
  • Grounding: Items that are close to the ground appear heavier than those that are elevated and allow some light underneath them, like furniture on legs.
visual weight 4

Why is visual weight important?

We’re not just teaching you about visual weight so you can impress your friends at your next dinner party. Visual weight is key because it’s a huge part of achieving visual balance. Let’s go back to the rooms you thought about earlier, some you loved and some you hated. A big part of the reason we hate waiting rooms is because they’re filled with low, stocky chairs. There is usually very little to balance out that room (kudos to the people who at least put a potted plant in the corner). The result is a space that feels heavy and tired, where spending time makes you feel heavy and tired.

Now think about the rooms you love. They most likely have a good balance of visually heavy and visually light pieces, with plenty of space to let the eye travel between them. Interior designers think about visual weight when putting rooms together so the eye can scan the space comfortably, easily finding anchor pieces while getting relief from items with less visual weight.

visual weight 3

How do I use visual weight in my interior design?

As with so much of interior design, using visual weight to your advantage is all about finding balance. Basically, being aware of an individual object’s perceived weight can help you steer clear of issues like stocking a room with too much heavy furniture, making it feel cramped or forgetting to add a visual anchor.

When adding pieces to your room or rearranging the space, take into account the visual weight. Imagine your room is on a fulcrum. You don’t want to crowd all your visually heavy items to one side. Distribute them throughout the room and break them up with visually light items and open space. Balancing your room is the key to creating a space with good design. If you’d like to take a deeper dive into this concept, check out our article on how best to achieve balance in interior design.

Even if you’ve never heard the term “visual weight” before today, you probably already had a sense that it was important. Did this guide help you? Will you make any changes to your home now that you’ve learned more? Let us know in the comments!

Helpful Hints for Small Room Arrangements

We hope you like the products we recommend. Just so you are aware, Freshome may collect a share of sales from the links on this page.

Small spaces can be tricky to decorate. You can spend hours scrolling through Pinterest, gathering your inspiration for your compact quarters, only to find that in practice you feel extremely limited. Whether you’re in a full-blown tiny home, a small apartment or just have a room in your home that’s short on square footage, we can help. We asked our Freshome team for their top tips on small room arrangements. Here are 12 helpful hints you’ll actually be able to use in your small space.

small room 4

Floating shelves and high-hung window coverings draw the eye up, making the space feel larger. Image: ThreeDiCube/Shutterstock

Think lofty

When you don’t have a lot of space along the x-axis of a room, think about the y-axis. Using your walls well can transform your room.

Float some shelves

In a small space, it can be hard to find a balance between overcrowding the room with furniture and it looking sparse. If you’re streamlining your furniture but still want the space to feel structured and designed, floating shelves are ideal. The Walnut Floating Shelves from The Container Store are perfect for displaying your favorite art and decor pieces while keeping table surfaces clear.

Get large-scale art

Again, just because you don’t want to crowd the room with stuff doesn’t mean you want it to look spartan. You can dress up even the simplest room with large wall art. If your room is especially small, swap a bold, graphic art piece for a large mirror. It will bounce light around the room, helping it feel bigger.

Elevate your window coverings

Help your room feel larger by drawing the eye up to your ceilings. When you hang your window coverings, hang the rod near the top of the wall. The long line of drapery helps the room feel more expansive.

small room 1

Think big

It’s a small room, so you should only put small items in it, right? Au contraire. Thinking big can help you transform your small space.

Add one large furniture piece

Confusing, we know. Why would you add something that’s going to take up a lot of your precious square footage? The answer lies in the feel of the room. Too many small-scale pieces can make the room feel cluttered and unanchored. Adding one large focal piece – whether that’s a comfortable sofa or a centering entertainment center – makes the room feel established.

Throw down a big rug

A light-colored, softly patterned rug can help brighten and soften your space, while also helping you delineate sections. Set a rug like West Elm’s Foil Diamonds Distressed Rug under the dining table or coffee table to create a sense of purpose for the space. Voilà! The rug delineates the area, clarifying its use.

Take a step back

When you’re designing a small room, it’s easy to get caught up in the details. But thinking big ensures you end up with a room in which you’ll actually want to spend time. Look at the room as a whole. If it’s still feeling small and cramped, make changes that will have a big impact, like lightening the wall color or adding more lighting to each corner.

small room 3

A multitasking ladder serves as wall art and blanket storage. Image: Photographee.eu/Shutterstock

Think utilitarian

In a small space, each item needs to pull its own weight. This is a time to think smart and get sneaky.

Hide storage

A small space needs storage. When your space is compact, the last thing you want is to have unwanted items sitting out, right in your eye line. While bigger spaces might be more forgiving, little rooms keep everything in plain sight. That is, unless you get creative. Look for furniture with hidden storage. West Elm has a Stacked Disk Coffee Table with a hidden compartment inside, while Pottery Barn has a Tamsen Storage Bench where you can tuck items away.

Multitask

Choose pieces that can be used for multiple purposes. A padded ottoman could be an ideal place to put up your feet or, with the addition of a tray on top, a place to serve drinks and snacks. West Elm’s wheeled Mid-Century Bar Cart can be pulled front and center when in use or tucked away conveniently. Multifunctional furniture can help you extend the use of your small room without cluttering it.

Get organized

If you do plan to leave items out in your small space, make sure to organize them. Grouping like with like can help your space look tidier. And don’t be afraid to turn to baskets to keep things readily available without forcing your guests to look at them the whole time they’re in the room.

small room 2

A ceiling-mounted lamp adds light and height to the space without taking up any precious square footage. A small coffee table adds functionality without cramping the room. Image: Westend61/Getty Images

Think thin

We talked about leveraging the elevation in your room to make it feel larger. Similarly, height can be a huge help when buying furniture for the space.

Stack it up

If you’ve got books, decor items or blankets you want to display in your small room, get a narrow bookcase. It’s a perfect display opportunity that minimizes square foot usage. Target’s Carson Narrow Bookcase is a tall, skinny bookcase that gives you five shelves of storage but is just 18 inches wide.

Add tiny tables

Small accent tables can make your compact room significantly more useful without making it feel cramped. Tuck a table at the end of the couch, side of the bed or in an unused corner. You’ll be amazed how much more pleasant it is to enjoy the room when you can easily put down your drink or book.

Choose skinny or mounted lamps

Whether you’re picking floor or table lamps, look for thin or wall-mount options. In a space where square footage is precious, these lamps can be powerful. They enable you to add more light – which makes the space feel larger – without sacrificing the flow of the room.

A small space can be a design challenge, but with these 12 actionable tips, you’re ready to tackle it. When you try them out, let us know which one was most helpful in the comments!

Ford has created a stunning line of laminate finishes for the brand Formica, managing to make laminate surfaces cool again. According to Formica, her collection of 10 finishes were “hand selected surfaces inspired by natural elements and neutral colors.”

Besides the laminate collection, she also has a lighting line for Target. It’s no secret she’s a big fan of Target’s modern furniture collection, Project 62. And she’s created a lighting capsule to work with the collection.

Using Faux Sheepskin and Cowhide Rugs in your Home

We hope you like the products we recommend. Just so you are aware, Freshome may collect a share of sales from the links on this page.

Faux sheepskin and cowhide rugs add warmth (literally and design-wise) to any room. Millions of animals are killed each year to produce skin for various products, and for homeowners who don’t want to purchase real animal skins, faux sheepskins and cowhides are a guilt-free and affordable way to enjoy these soft and plush rugs.

Fake cowhide can be used anywhere

“It’s amazing how adding a hide rug to a room can be an instant game changer,” says Lori Wiles of Lori Wiles Design in Cedar Rapids, IA. “A boldly patterned cowhide is an unexpected (slightly renegade) element and makes a traditional space feel less stuffy and static.” They’re also a good option for renters.  Design and decorating options for renters may be limited, but these rugs are one way to transform a space without violating your rental agreement.

Cowhide rugs are easy to swap out

Wiles explains that the shape of hide or the fluffy texture of sheepskin can soften a modern space. “Since hides are typically smaller than a seating area, I like to place them on top of other rugs with contrasting textures like sisal, jute, or cork,” Wiles says. “This lets the hide rug be a great accessory in the room, rather than the major element and is easy to switch out when you want to change the look of the room.”

Facts to consider about faux rugs

Faux rugs not as durable

However, be advised that there is a difference between faux and real versions. “Faux sheepskin or faux cow hide rugs are not as durable as natural hides so they are best used in low traffic areas, like the home office or bedroom,” according to Blanchette Nelson, principal design consultant at B R Nelson Designs, in New York.

Coordinate pillows

You can also coordinate your pillows to match. Image: Alexandru Chiriac/Shutterstock

“Rugs should be proportionately sized for the room and furniture it is anchoring,” says Nelson. “Whether fabricated (or natural), the irregular, free flow form of sheepskin or cowhide allows you to add interest to your floor where a rug could be either too small or big for a space.”

However, Karen Otto at Home Star Staging in Dallas, TX, does not use faux sheepskin and cowhide rugs. “Skins and hides are a beautiful, natural by-product of the animals that much of our food, clothing and accessories come from,” she explains. “So, when people get offended by the use of a skin, I will ask if they are using leather of any kind; belts, purses, shoes – or if they eat meat.’

Add texture and interest

Ottos says the majority of people — even some vegetarians — have leather products.  “Why feel differently about the use of a skin or hide? It’s really no different than any of the other animal by-products most of us consume or use and why let something so beautiful and useful go to waste?” The photo above demonstrates how to use the most stylish color of every year.

These rugs are great for layering

“With sheepskins, which are usually smaller than cowhides, I use them to layer on ottomans, chairs, fireplace hearths and even at the foot of the bed,” Otto says. She also uses them on the floor near the side of the bed. “They can make a warm, comforting winter look that carries into other months, making the look luxurious, glam and even a bit eclectic,” Otto says.

“Sheepskin and cowhide rugs transcend all décor styles and help blend styles seamlessly with neutral, natural texture and color,” Otto says. “Cowhides are great for layering under cocktail tables, desks and even over other rugs and carpeting,”

“Hides are also great to use when you may have an awkward space,” Otto says. “They can help transition the flow in an organic fashion, helping create better visual flow in a room.” In fact, Otto says she likes to use them to ground seating arrangements and desks when creating the perfect home office.

Fake sheepskin is available in almost every color under the sun, including beige, black, white, pink, gray, teal, navy and purple. Some of the most popular cowhide colors are black and white – or brown and white – calfskin and zebra.   They’re also available in other styles, such as cheetah.

Trends in Window Treatments

Window treatments provide privacy, let the sun in (or not) and help to keep the cold weather out. And they do all of this while dressing up your windows and making your rooms look formal and elegant, modern or romantic – or while making a whimsical or bold design statement. So, what’s popular in the world of window treatments? Freshome asked several interior designers and window treatment experts to share some of the trends in this area.

Roman and Roller Shades

Roman shades add color

These stylish Roman shades add texture to the space. Image: KhongkitWiriyachan/Getty Images

“Clean and simple is one of the biggest trends in window treatments, like pairing treatments for coverage with simple side panels just to give that pop of color and texture to make a statement in the room,” says Shane Aidala, Marketing Director at Gotcha Covered. “Traditional items such as shutters and Roman shades are popular in many areas.” Aidala says that roller and solar shades are some of the fastest-growing products because they are now available in a variety of colors and transparencies.

Regarding colors, Aidala says brown remains a staple color for treatments. “Blues, soft greens, lavenders, berries and grays are popular, as well as jewel tones in orange and gold,” he adds.

“Roman shades are classic and have the clean lines for modern interiors,” explains Carol Marcotte, Lead Designer at Form & Function in Raleigh, NC. And that’s why they’re also recommended by Carolina V. Gentry of Pulp Design Studios in Dallas, TX. “For letting in the light, top up, bottom down Roman shades are great because they create privacy but let light in.” Gentry also likes the look of tailored window treatments. “For a simple and clean look, use decorative trim on the edge of drapery panels or Roman shades,” Gentry advises.

roller shades2

“Roller shades are seeing a huge increase in popularity in our region,” says Jeff King, Shutters and Blinds Specialist at The Blind King in Fort Worth, TX. This sentiment is shared by Lyndsey Dianne, Owner and Operator of DianneDecor.com in Houston, TX. “The choice to use shades in lieu of blinds as your primary window treatment is really popular right now, especially shades made from natural woven fibers, such as bamboo,” Dianne says. “The natural, neutral color of the shades paired with a white curtain is a lovely combination, especially if you like the modern farmhouse decorating style.”

Shutters and Blinds

Plantation shutters add character and elegance – and they’re super easy to operate. In addition to wood and faux wood plantation shutters, you can choose moisture resistant, light control, and even insulated options. However, wood shutters are not recommended for use in high-moisture areas, whereas composite shutters can resist moisture damage, warping and staining.

Blinds are also available in a variety of materials and styles, such as the wood, faux wood with embossed colors that look like real wood, and vinyl. Blinds can also be horizontal or vertical and either corded, cordless, or motorized.

Hardware

Hardware

The right hardware can bring the entire look together. Image: phototropic/Getty Images

While the window treatments themselves are important, the hardware can add another level of style to the design. “Acrylic accents on finials, tie backs and rods are huge right now,” says Gentry. Metal hardware is another popular trend, according to Aidala. “It adds a simpler and more streamlined look to the treatments,” he explains.

Technology

Motorized

Motorized window treatments are convenient. Image: Automated XiXinXing/Getty Images

Imagine being able to open and close your blinds while you’re sitting on the sofa, in another room or before you even enter the house. “Technology is now something to consider with your window treatments,” says Aidala. “High-tech touches with home automation and motorization are on the rise because of their convenience and safety.”

Window treatments safe

Motorized window treatments are also safer than cords. Image: Onzon/Shutterstock

And that’s why King says smart home automation and motorization aren’t the future – they’re happening now. “Cordless blinds and shades are quickly becoming standard because cords are not safe for kids and pets,” he explains. In fact, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, between 1990 and 2015, there were 16,827 window blind-related injuries among children under six years old.

Dos and Don’ts When Choosing Window Treatments

Window treatments functionality

Functionality is an important consideration. Image: Robert Kneschke/Shutterstock

Aidala recommends choosing something that you love, instead of selecting something that is trending at the moment. “You will be the one to look at it every day, so make sure that it is something that you will enjoy,” he says. “Also, consider not only how the treatment looks, but how it is going to function and meet your needs for the room.” Aidala says this means you should consider factors including privacy, light control and insulation.

Window treatments combined

Combine window treatments to achieve the perfect look. Image: Irena Misevic/Shutterstock

“When choosing blinds, go for a wider slat. No mini-blinds. Look for 2.5″ slats on your blinds to maximize view, light and ease of cleaning,” recommends King. “Stay away from heavy draperies. They’re not as in right now, and are also hard to automate and motorize.”

Window Treatments - crisp and clean

This room is crisp and clean. Image: scovad/Getty Images

Marcotte advises consumers to consider organic and textural elements like a woven or matchstick blind. “These are lovely alone with or without lining (depending on privacy needs), but you could also have a layer of drapes over the top, as well.” She adds that neutral linen drapes are timeless. “They’re classic and can be decorated around over the years and have a more calming effect.” Another option is sheers. “They come in a variety of subtle patterns now and are not your ‘grandma’s sheers.’ They can be stylish and still allow light in, where privacy and blackout are not necessary,” Marcotte says.

12 Pretty Reasons Plaid Decor is Exactly What You Need

There are some decorating trends that never fade away. Instead, they reinvent themselves over and over. We love plaid decor, and it’s a perennial favorite with interior designers. Just like floral prints, plaid has many different patterns that can weather interior design trends every season. The historically traditional plaid patterns have been adapted by decor designers for decades. That brought us the iconic patterns and colors of the upholstered furniture of the 1970s. Today’s trendy plaids return to their roots as tartan and buffalo patterns.

You won’t see as many plaid sofas or carpets as we did decades ago. Instead, the plaid trend is used primarily as accent furniture or decorative accessories. If your first thought of plaid is a cabin or lodge, you’ll be happy to see that plaid looks wonderful in most decorating styles when you choose the right one. Here are our favorite plaid accents right now:

Why We’re in Love With Tartan Plaid Decor

Tartan plaid is a timeless pattern that has always been welcome in traditional home decor. The colors of tartan plaid are familiar in navy blue, emerald green and red (usually with black accent lines in the pattern). Today’s tartan includes pretty neutrals like gray and beige – and even white. The new plaid color palettes make it easy to add them to your existing decor when you’re looking for a comfortable accent piece.

Decorating With Versatile Buffalo Check Plaid Decor

Buffalo check plaid never goes out of style. The simplicity of this comfortable pattern allows it to coordinate with a variety of decorating styles. Buffalo plaid decor is made up of only two colors intersecting to create a neutral third color that gives it more presence without looking fussy. Gingham plaid can look a lot like buffalo plaid, but the key is the oversized checks that give buffalo plaid its unique look.

How to Make Area Rugs Fit In With Your Room’s Style

Adding a new area rug to a room can be a daunting task. You’d think it would be easy: just throw down a new rug and you’re done. Then you see all the styles and colors of area rugs out there. And the area rug is such a large, space-defining element in a room, you can’t pick just any rug.

Below are some simple tips that will help you pick out the right rug for your space, no matter which room style you currently have. You may be surprised to find out how easy it is to work with different rug styles.

Area Rugs Color Style

Color is one of the most important features of a new area rug. Image: Photographee.eu/Shutterstock

Color Matching

One key way to pick a rug is to match it to the colors you already have in the room. You can see how this idea works in practice in the photo above. The area rug does a good job of incorporating other colors that are in the room. A multicolored rug is good for matching a wide variety of shades that might already be in the space.

You can also see how well this idea works for spaces that use a high dose of bright, artsy colors. If you have a space with a very specific color dynamic, or that is just colorful in general, you’ll want to focus on the color of the area rugs you find first and foremost.

Using an Accent Rug

Another idea is to just go bold with area rugs. The photo above shows a very modern space with stark furniture and neutral coloring. Then you have this darker blue, textured rug. Blue tends to fit in anywhere, so it’s not out of place. And it adds some grounded color.

You could use this idea for a variety of styles. For instance, you might have a regal space dominated by rich wood textures and then put a bright red carpet in the middle of the room for a bold pop of color. This idea allows you to get creative with a space.

Making Use of an Overall Accent Color Style

Accent colors are always fun to incorporate into a space. If you see a rug you love and it currently doesn’t fit your room’s color scheme at all, it’s easy to add little elements to make sure it does. For instance, the yellow rug in the photo above matches the yellow throw pillows, pouf and clock. Blankets, pillows and wall art are easy enough to add to a space, too. So you can make virtually any rug fit into your room’s color scheme.

This is easiest to do with an already neutral color scheme. However, it is possible to work with multiple accent colors.

Sticking with Neutral Area Rugs

Another very easy way to put in a new area rug is to go with a very neutral base for the color. For instance, the white rug in the photo above would fit in just about anywhere. However, this one, in particular, goes well with the gray and white color scheme of the space.

The photo above shows how you can also use an area rug to work in some geometric detail. The textured lines in the rug do a good job of adding some visual interest to the space. Texture is key to spicing up stark, modern spaces, as you can see in the photo above.

Area Rugs Geometric Style

Focusing on Geometric Patterns

Another idea for area rugs is to go for pure geometry. The area rug in the photo above does just that. Any rug that focuses on a geometric pattern will add visual interest to a room. And going for a neutral-colored rug helps it fit in anywhere.

You can also see how a rug with a high visual impact like this fits into more modern industrial spaces. These spaces tend to get their style from texture and geometry since they’re usually on the minimalistic side. You can see that principle in the textured concrete wall above. As a result, a textured or patterned rug fits perfectly into more modern industrial styles as an accent piece.
